Sunil Gulati, the longtime president of U.S. Soccer, will not seek another term as head of the federation, he told ESPN.
“I spent a lot of time thinking about it and talking about it with people in many different positions — many of whom told me I should run,” Gulati said on Monday. “But in the end, I think the best thing for me personally, and for the federation, is to see someone new in the job.”
Gulati’s decision to stand down will bring to an end a 12-year run as the leader of American soccer’s governing body, and an association with the federation that stretches three decades and covers multiple positions.
Well, congrats you #SunilOut people! You did it! It’s no secret that many people have wanted Sunil Gulati out for a while now. Once the USMNT didn’t qualify for the 2018 World Cup, those voices only grew louder. This will be a day of jubilation for many. Personally, I feel like it was definitely time for him to go. Soccer is at a point where it needs a change. There needs to be a new voice at the top. Gulati brought it as far as he could. Its like that Batman quote “you either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain” Sunil became the villain.
Would he have been a hero if he dipped earlier? Probably not but I just really like that quote, and Batman.
Look, Sunil brought stability to US soccer. Is it perfect? No. Did the game grow? Yes. Is there more that needs to be done? Of course. The next president, hopefully one that isnt tied into the SUM, MLS, USSF circle of trust, will need to take United States Soccer to the next level. We need a hero that Gotha….US Soccer deserves.
